December 2020 End of Watch Monthly Update
November 2020 - 16 Officers Down
Looking back at November, reflecting on what will hopefully be the strangest Thanksgiving of our lifetimes, I am confronted by the stories of the 16 officers who died in the line of duty.
This is not normal.
In 2019, November witnessed 11 officers lost. The entire year of 2019 saw 148 officers down.
In 2020, November took 16 officers from us. 2020 has taken 265 officers, so far.
Sixteen lives lost are too many.
Each life lost is a tragedy.
In this battle, so long fought, we must work to not grow comfortable with the persistent threat at our door. After the pandemic arrived on our shores, each month saw more officer deaths than the same time last year.
This will end and, hopefully soon, we will not see so many men and women who love and serve their communities lost as a result of that service.
The holidays are a time for being thankful and remembering those dear to us. And while the pandemic has taken so very many from us this year, we can be thankful that one day, hopefully soon, it will end.
